The Retired Cooks Diary
Love Let Me Count the Ways
By Suzette Pennington Munson
This last week was Valentine’s Day. For anyone over the age of 2 that means cards, candy and possibly special visits to restaurants and hotels. Well at my age I am kind of like the ol’ country girl that went to live in a dormitory her first year in college. The girls were all anxious to be able to relate the adventures of their dates on Friday night with their roommates. They decided to keep their boldness from the Dorm Mother by counting the times they were kissed by saying “morning” at breakfast on Saturday Morning. The first of the young ladies came in and said “GOOD Morning”, the second said “Good Morning, Good Morning, the third said, “Good Morning this Morning isn’t it a wonderful Morning to see the Sun shining this Morning” and the ol’ country girl came in to see the others at Breakfast table and announced “HOWDY, I’m Just So Proud to be Here!”
Well, this Valentines I am just so proud to be here!! Celebrating was wonderful. You see we did not just go out to eat but we managed to “squeeze “a nice dinner with my Daughter Jennifer and her Husband Ronnie and their children but we also had an nice quiet dinner on Valentines eve together.
With the whole family we decided on the “Spicy Mexican” in Bowie. If you haven’t checked it out it is a must. They are a more authentic style of Mexican. I have enjoyed their chicken mole’ and it is as good as any I have had in San Antonio or Austin. They have daily specials that usually include their Tortilla Soup which again is one of the best I have ever had and I love Tortilla Soup. This evening I decided to once again choose from the “specials” there was one listing that was interesting, it was called “Flambeau”, interesting name, and so reading the ingredients I became intrigued. Fajita meat of your choice with poblano peppers , onions, green peppers, and covered with cheese. It was Sooo Good!!!
The rest of the group chose more of the Tex Mex regular choices and of course for the little ones there were also chicken strips and tacos.
For our second and more “romantic meal” we decided on the most romantic place in Montague County…..yea right!! Well at least they had a Valentines Special. The “Armadillo Grill “ on Hwy 287 at FM 174. Their specials was 2, 13oz rib eye steaks with 2 sides, salad, appetizer and desert for $39.99 and believe me compared to Dallas steakhouse prices, it was a bargain! We stuffed ourselves on wonderful steak and brought home the rest for dinner the next evening.
I really enjoyed my extended Valentines by spending it with the ones I love, and I am learning that I am so blessed to live in North Texas where there are so many hidden treasures in places to have wonderful meals with friends and family.
